TaichungTaichung, the third largest city in Taiwan is located 20 kilometers (13 miles) from the coast and 174 kilometers (104.4 miles) south of Taipei. Taichung was once a small village established by Chinese settlers in the 17th Century. It has now become an international community with all the amenities of a big city. It has its own international harbor and is centrally located along the North-South Freeway.

Taichung is also famous for its night markets, lively beer houses and Chinese-style parks complete with pavilions and lakes. Taichung is much more spread out than Taipei or Kaohsiung, the pace and pressure of modern city life is replaced by a far mellower approach to living.

Its commercial disirict, abundant cultural activities, and the warmth of its residents make Taichung an attractive city.

Dakeng Forest Recreation Area

The Dakeng Forest Recreation Area, located in suburban Taichung, has one of the best preserved natural environments in the Taichung area. In addition to eight hiking trails that wind through its forested hills, it also encompasses a variety of recreational facilities and tourist farming areas. Its combination of spectacular natural scenery and recreational facilities in the same place makes the Dakeng Forest Recreation Area one of the best places in the Taichung vicinity for mountain hiking and quiet relaxation.

Encore Garden

The 30-hectare Encore Garden is a pleasing patchwork of carefully designed European and Japanese-style gardens.

Local and international visitors can relax in the Encore Garden's splendid setting, while enjoying a number of special attractions, including the "water dance"a fountain with colored laser lights and music. This eye-catching display is the main feature of the garden and is famous thrughout Taiwan.
