Fongshan was originally the name of a mountain, located at the south of Fongshan City. Watching from a distance, its summit looks like a phoenix’s hat. With the small peaks rippling on both sides, it gives people the feeling that this phoenix is ready to fly into the sky.
Therefore, people called it Fongshan (Phoenix Hill). In early times, the inhabitants called the place “Bitou.” At that time, when the Ching Court sent officers to govern Taiwan, they established Fongshan Cheng (the old town) at Zuoying now.

As people regarded the Fengshui of the old town not good, they built another “Fongshan Hsincheg (a new town),” which is Fongshan City now.
